Makita 9404 Belt Sander Review

The Makita 9404 variable speed 4 X 24” belt sander is a true beast of a sander.  If you are seeking something sturdy and durable for your next big sanding project, then you definitely need to give the Makita 9404 a look.

The Makita 9404 is truly a wonderful sander.  Relatively quiet (84dB, the quietest sander in its class), the machine’s powerful and efficient motor seems stronger than what its amperage suggests.  Running at a burly 8.8 amps, the Makita 9404’s variable speed starts at an easy 690 fpm and adjusts all the way up to 1440 fpm.  It comes equipped with a dust bag to keep that work environment clean, and it sands either wood or metal and removes both paint and rust.  A clever design permits flush sanding right into the corner of the wall with the tip and side of the sander.  You won’t need to adjust the belt on the fly because the Makita 9404 was designed with an auto tracking belt system.  The Makita 9404 also comes with an optional sanding shoe for precise sanding control.  Perhaps one of the more noteworthy features is its power cable.  The 9404 arrives standard with a 16.4 power cord for durability and maneuverability.

A brand new Makita 9404 4 X 24” variable speed belt sander may cost as much as $350 depending on where you buy.  Be sure to shop around because you should be able to find a new Makita 9404 for a good deal less.  If you are in the market for something used, expect to pay in the range of $125 to $175.
